One of the reasons I love being a photographer is that you get to travel to obscure locations with a group of complete nutters to shoot some band promo material – bring on the lads from GATÖ NEGRO, an old abandoned mine in the Andalucian hills and a rusty old ‘donut’ trailer, the perfect location… The old marble mines are somewhere we have been before – on mountain bikes back in 2016, once there I knew immediately that this location had band promo shoot written all over it so when GATÖ NEGRO got in touch the old mines were top of the list for a location.
To say that the band was ‘up for it’ is an understatement… a convoy of five cars heading up what can only be described as 4×4 territory winding tracks, three point turns and rocky roads fully laden with guitars, mic’s, drum kits, musicians and camera gear. Once there, everyone knew the backdrop was ideal and although cold an angry looking sky was the cherry on the cake.
The K30 was on video duty perched on top of the Mach3 for a bit of time-lapse and the first port of call was the old ‘donut’ trailer which did beg for a touch of HDR in post – these guys are no soft act… Moving on, the huge squares of rock were brought into shot, a little fish eye (why not!) then it was set up time in the quarry itself – almost a private gig, the guys wanted things to look real.
By midday the skies were clearing and the band were beginning to come up with some ‘off the cuff’ ideas of their own, a three hour shoot covering all bases including promo, video and plenty of behind the scenes action.
