Cortijo photo session Granada, shooting in old abandoned cortijos is always an exciting prospect as you never know what you are going to get, one thing for certain though is a big element of ‘rustic’. Typically, old cortijos are found out in the Andalucian campo (countryside) and have been left to the elements for decades, there is also not much light especially with old buildings in the Altiplano area of Granada which often have ‘cave rooms’ dug out at the rear of the property – if the cortijo is built on the front of a hill then the probability is that it is partially cave.
Obviously with old buildings like this safety comes first and a torch is essential to find your way around, once established as safe to shoot then its a matter of finding the best backdrops both inside and out. Many old cortijos have tiled floors, big fireplaces and weathered rustic doors as well as many other features so you don’t have to search long for a good spot. One thing to note is that these old places are dirty and dusty (I never change a lens inside a cortijo!), the walls are also painted with a product called ‘cal’ which is an old Spanish whitewash, unfortunately it leaves a residue so anything that touches the wall will end up white – like this red coat we have in these images.
For this shoot we started outside then went into the depths of the cortijo, inside was fairly dark so out came the Flashbender, watching our step as this place had been abandoned for a very long time we discovered room after room with some fantastic old features, cave rooms at the back made things even more interesting and there were still old wooden chairs and pieces of furniture which had just been left when the last person left the house decades ago.
If you fancy a cortijo photo session then get in touch, old building like these are fantastic for band promo sessions, individual shoots and solo artists. The backdrops are unique and there is always something different to shoot in these rural locations. There are some specifics to remember and an element of preparation but we will handle that for you.
