Inspiration from music videos… Photography and video are miles apart yet still connected in a way that makes you want to view, watch, listen and admire so as a photographer searching for inspiration online from a band that kind of fits your photographic style may not be a bad thing from time to time as it throws up a few ideas not just in composition and style etc but from the actual thinking of the director to create something different, to better the last offering with fresh ideas and a different theme – or perhaps the same theme from an alternative angle. In this respect photographers are very similar (at least we should be) in striving for something that makes people engage in the work and say ‘Wow, I like that!’
So what are the examples I look at and why?
Take slipknot (volume alert), a band who’s trademark is ‘masks’, in their ‘Before I Forget’ video however the masks are abandoned – shot from a different angle, some are left on the floor, hung on mic stands and band members are without their ‘signature’. However, the video is cleverly done as there are no faces, a wide open lens covers that but my photography point is that it is different through the final edit but more so through the idea…
Ok, these videos are big budget stuff but I love the images below from Linkin Park, remember we are talking inspiration here, in the video below you could pause it in almost any place you like and begin to build a theme in your own mind for the next photo-shoot.
Inspiration from music videos are one way to start thinking about themes for your next photo-shoot (both as a photographer and a model) and lets face it there are millions of examples out there for inspiration.

July 2017 adendum: RIP Chester (Linkin Park) – thanks for the music and so much more.
